Dr. Oviatt received his BA and MA at Piedmont International University. He completed his EdD at Liberty University in July 2023. His PhD at Carolina is ABD. 

 

Dr. Oviatt has served in ministry and leadership roles for over 45 years. He has been married to Denise for 44 years, and they have two adult children.

 

He is an adjunct professor at the Deaf Studies Program at Crown College of the Bible in Powell, Tennessee.

 

Dr. Oviatt is also the Director of the Deaf Studies Program and is an adjunct professor in the DMin and MMin programs at Piedmont Divinity School at Carolina University,

Description

The course provides students with an introduction to the profession of sign language interpreting. Content covered includes a global history of the profession (organizations, credentialing, philosophical and ethical roles, and models of interpreting) and current or emerging trends in the field. Additionally, techniques on interpreting processing and cognitive skills will be introduced. Moreover, frameworks for critically analyzing how service providers (interpreters, educators, etc.) un/consciously contribute to dis/empowerment, dis/ability, and in/access in the deaf community.
