Welcome to Linguistics. Throughout this session we will go through the entire textbook on ASL lingustics by Valli, Lucas, Mulrooney, and Villanueva titled "Linguistics of American Sign Language."
Here is the schedule:
- Week 1: Defining Language and Linguistics (Units 1-2) -October 21 - October 27
- Week 2: Phonology (Units 3-8) -October 28 - November 3
- Week 3: Morphology (Units 9-13) - November 4 - November 10
- Week 4: Syntax (Units 14-20) -November 11 - November 17
- Week 5: Semantics (Units 21-22) November 18 - November 24
- Week 6: Language in Use (Units 23-26) -November 25 - December 1
- Week 7: Wrapping it up – Review and Final Exam - December 2 - December 8
It is important that you manage your time well so you can engage in the course activities. One pro tip - when filling out the discussion forum, please write your answers first on a word document, and then post - because sometimes you will lose connection to the server and all your work will be lost. You can't get credit for work you tried to submit, you can only get credit for work you actually submitted on time.
If you need help in this course you have resources - your instructor, the ASL/Deaf mentors, and your peers in the class.
Welcome to the class, looking forward to teaching you about ASL linguistics.
Warmly,
Dr. Zimmerman
