This is a course in academic writing, with an emphasis on essay writing, which explores technical skills and rhetorical theory using a variety of readings.
Throughout this course, you will write 4 major essays and complete several minor assignments. The goals of this course are to:
- Be able to create interesting essays that demonstrate the following six general characteristics of effective writing: (1) a clear thesis and original,
insightful supporting ideas, (2) effective organization of ideas, (3) fluent expression of ideas, (4) appropriate and interesting voice, (5) clarity and
precision, and (6) good command of Standard English.
- Demonstrate ability to analyze, think critically, and respond persuasively to a variety of readings.
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic rhetorical theory.
- Demonstrate ability to write essays for specific purposes and for specific audiences.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Standard English grammar and usage.
- Understand the role of reading actively in the writing process.
- Understand the steps in the writing process and be able to follow them when preparing essays for both extemporaneous and long-term assignments.
- Identify the primary traits of the eight different methods of essay development and the cue words that signal the purposes in writing prompts
